The Jalon Valley
The Valley of Jalon, also known as the Valle del Pop and the Valley of Wine, has one of the most popular and admired views in the heart of the Costa Blanca. The valley has large flat fields of lush grapevines, almond trees and orange groves, surrounded by magnificent mountains that appear to change shape every time you look at them. The Jalon Valley is spectacular in late January when the whole valley is covered in a magnificent pink and white blanket of almond blossom. The valley is a walker's paradise, with routes ranging from a gentle stroll to a six hour walk around the Sierra Bernia mountains south of Jalon. |
Nestling in the centre of the Jalon Valley is the village of Jalon itself. Jalon is a quiet town centred about the old square where you will find a beautiful fountain and Jalon's famous church with its shiny blue dome. The town has many small streets with an abundance of shops, bars and restaurants. |
 |
In 1472 the Moors living in the Jalon valley sent a selection of wines to the Valencian Court and negotiated with traders in Javea the sale of a product which in time would become the base of Marina Alta's economy, raisins produced in the traditional 'riu-raus', the traditional arched porches used for drying grapes. The area is now famous for its local wines which belong to the 'denominación de origen' of Alicante and raisins are still produced in small quantities. |
 |
Today the town is the capital of the Pop valley and is a lively town with craft shops, wine cellars, restaurants offering a whole range of services to tourists. Every Saturday a large "rastro" market is held in the area of the Azud that specializes in antique furniture. |
Because of its excellent weather and environment the area is an ideal location for holidaymakers and is less than 10 kilometres from the beautiful beaches of Javea.
